Healing and Deliverance

(Note: Most fundamental to this discussion is an understanding of Grace versus Legalism.)

Healing

Regarding Healing, we ask:

·       Can sickness ever bring a blessing?

·        Is there any link between sin and sickness?

·        Is there a link between divine healing and faith?

As to sickness bringing a blessing, we see that Paul’s illness proved a blessing to the Galatians.  In Galatians 4:13-14 (NIV), Paul says:

As you know, it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you. Even though my illness was a trial to you, you did not treat me with contempt or scorn. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God, as if I were Christ Jesus himself.

Although perhaps not in the case above, generally speaking, there is an implied link between sin and sickness, as seen in Psalm 119:67:

Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.

This link between sin and sickness is again seen in James 5:14-16:

Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

An again in 1 Corinthians 11:27-32:

27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. 32 When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.

As to faith, there is a link, generally speaking, between healing and faith, as seen in Mark 5:34:

He [Jesus] said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."

Three recommended books on divine healing include:

·        The Real Faith, an online book by Charles S. Price.  Regarding misunderstandings about divine healing, Price said:

“To believe in healing is one thing; but to have faith for it is altogether something else.  That’s why so many needy people who believe come to the Lord on the basis of His promises and try to affirm that they’re healed—thinking that by doing so they actually will be healed.

Therein lies our difficulty.  We have made faith a condition of the mind, when it is a divinely imparted grace of the heart.”

·        Divine Healing, an online book by Andrew Murray, who said regarding modern medicine:

"We may be thankful to God for giving us doctors.  Their vocation is one of the most noble....Nevertheless, it is Jesus Himself who is always the first, the best, the greatest Physician."

·        The Gospel of Healing, an online book by A.B. Simpson, who said regarding healing by medical means:

"There may be--there always will be--instances where faith cannot be exercised.  And if natural means have--as they do have--a limited value, there is ample room for their employment in these cases."

Deliverance

Regarding the topic of demonization and deliverance, we ask the following questions:

·        If a person has a demon, does he automatically receive deliverance upon becoming a Christian?

·        Is it possible for a Christian to become demonized?

·        What about bizarre “spiritual warfare” techniques against demons?
